The Gateway Of India: Mumbai's Top Hot Spot

A visit by a young cousin made me realize what the importance of the top hot spot of Mumbai, The Gateway Of India, is. 'Where's the main gate of India?', he said the moment he alighted from the train at V.T. Station. I was puzzled.
'What? main gate of India? what's that?'
'Aw, uncle, come on...from where everyone enters into Mumbai...This IS Mumbai, isn't it?'
'Yes'
'So where's the gate? I know one has to enter through a gate to enter Mumbai, isn't that true?'
Then it struck me and I said, 'yeah, of course...'
He was referring to the Gateway of India.
I told him that we will have to travel a bit to reach the gate. We took a cab to the Gateway of India and the excitement in my nephew's eyes was motivation enough to visit this monument and the biggest tourist spot of Mumbai, which obviously I had not visited for quite sometime now...and even if I have, sometimes while visiting the Taj Mahal Hotel, situated right opposite the Gateway, I have hardly noticed "THE main gate of India"
Anyway, I asked the pesky nose-picking toddler whether he knew anything at all about the gateway. He didn't, poor boy... and neither did I... (Oh my Gawd, now what do I do?)
I knew I won't be able to get out of this now that I have broached the subject. Then God sent me a saviour- the cab driver, God bless him.
He started narrating the story of the Gateway of India...as follows...

"It was built way back in 1911...uhh...December I think..."

I was impressed. This guy seemed more educated than me, for sure. (Later I found out he was, actually more educated than me...shit...nevermind that now)
He continued...

"The Gateway of India was built to honor the visiting King and Queen...their names were... yeah... King George V and Queen Mary. They were visiting Mumbai, which was Bombay then for the first time..."

(But how did they make the structure so fast? Surely they must have planned the whole thing.)

"Of course...you are not as smart as you look, do you?"

The tot laughed...as I sulked...

"The foundation stone was laid on 31 March 1911, by the Governor of Bombay-Sir George Sydenham Clarke. The full construction was finished only in 1924. It was inaugurated on December 4th 1924 by the Viceroy. You know what...this is the gate from where the last of the British troops went out after India became independent. It was like a festival here...big ceremony..."

The nephew asked, 'but how do you know all this?'
"I was born here and lived most of my life here...so I decided to study everything about this place."
The nephew's eyes remained wide opened as the taxi drove right in front of the Gateway of India. He was not the only one, though. I was wide eyed, baffled too. It was evening and the beautiful monument looked even more beautiful.
My nephew walked through the gate many times as he wanted to truly ensure that his entrance to Mumbai is properly established.
Needless to say, this visit was one of the most memorable ones, except for the depressing fact that I was less educated than a taxi driver.(I hate myself)

It's Tuesday. Alcohol? No way! Non-Veg? Not today! 'cos today is Tuesday- the day of the 'God of Beginnings', the ever benevolent fulfiller of wishes- The Lord Ganesha.
The knees may ache, the ankles hurt bad, yet the horde of people continue to walk towards one common goal by foot towards the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir, situated in the heart of the City of Mumbai, at Prabhadevi. The only place which causes a traffic jam on a tuesday due to the number of people on the roads, the onle place in the City of Dreams where actually dreams are fulfilled. That's the Siddhivinayak Temple- a Hindu temple dedicated to the Lord Ganesha.

It was built in the year 1801 by one Mr. Laxman Vithu and Mrs. Deubai Patil. The exact date as per the records is November 19th, 1801.
They say Lord Ganesha grants everyone their wishes- 9 Tuesdays for a young girl looking for a groom, 3 for someone who needs a job, unlimited Tuesdays or any other day for those who surrender to this God and ask him to grant whatever he thinks is right for them. The temple has become a landmark all over India as we see people traveling to Mumbai from all parts of the country to worship Ganpati Bappa at the Siddhivinayak Temple.

Although, the security has been really beefed up in recent times as the mandir has been on the hitlist of many terrorists, it is still the one place you cannot afford not to visit in Mumbai.
No laptops or cameras are allowed inside the sanctorium. Mobile phones are allowed but you are requested to keep them off once you enter the security check at the main gate.
Also, there is a special gate where you can pay 50 bucks to enter to avoid the serpentine queues at the general gate. This gate does have a queue but it is considerably less than the general gate. Also there are special VIP entrances for which you can pay a lumpsum donation amount starting from about Rs. 5000 to enter directly inside. This facility is generally availed of by Bollywood celebrities and politicians. The well known Desi celebs who visit the temple every tuesday are Ekta Kapoor (The most famous one, who walks all the way from Juhu).
Amitabh Bachchan and his family, Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai are quite regulars at the temple too. Many more celebs pledge their faith here and believe in the good blessings of Lord Ganesha.
So if you are in Mumbai, this is the hot spot to visit and get blessed for life.

P.S. Secret Tip: Whisper your wish into the ear of the silver mice kept inside-It is said, the mice convey your message directly to Lord Ganesha. Don't forget to cover the other ear while whispering to it.

Also do not forget to take darshan of Lord Hanuman- there is a small temple inside which is dedicated to Lord Hanuman.

Haji Ali Darga: Mumbai's Most Religious Place

The calm is palpable, the view, breath taking as you step onto the 500 yard walkway to reach the Haji Ali Dargah (See Wallpapers) which is situated right in the middle of the sea off the Worli bay. Haji Ali is considered one of the most secular worship places amongst all religious hot spots of Mumbai.
Once, while visiting the Durgah, I had a very interesting encounter with an old gentleman seated at the Darga, enjoying the sea breeze. I sat beside him and he just looked at me and asked, 'do you know the story of this Darga?'
'No', I said.
'Do you know it was built in the year 1431?'
I was shocked and very interested now. So the story began.
'According to historical records available with the Haji Ali Trust, a Muslim Preacher, Syed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari had arrived in Bombay in the early 1400s.
He had stumbled upon this island city after roaming the whole world. This Durgah was built in his memory'
I was amazed at the kind of history this place had because when you look at the structure right in the middle of water, you tend to assume that it must have been quite modern. But, guess, the olden times had much better technology than we have now.
Anyway, the story continues...
'Legend has it that one day Bukhari saw a woman crying, holding an empty vessel. On asking, the woman cried that she had spilled the oil that she was carrying and that if she did not take home some oil, her husband would beat her. Bukhari felt sorry for the woman and then miraculously jabbed a finger in the ground and oil gushed out to the joy of the distraught woman. But this incident did not make Bukhari better. He was distraught with guilt thinking that he had hurt mother earth with his action. Apparently, his health suffered because of this guilt of his and he asked his followers to bury him at sea when he left his body. The followers did exactly as they were directed by Baba. But the coffin drifted in the sea for days and then settled on a small islet just off the Worli coast.
Taking this as some kind of a sign, his followers decided to bury the coffin on the islet and built a Durgah around it'.
This Mumbai Hot Spot is an integral part of any local Bombayite because of the totally secular nature of the worship house. Attracting more than 40000 visitors a week,the Haji Ali Darga has as many Hindus and Christians as there are Muslims lining up to pay their respect. Probably, this is what sets this place apart.
Built over a sprawling area of about 4500 square meters, this historic place was also supposedly lined up for renovation and revamping with a budget of about 500 crores, by the authorities. But, knowing the bureaucracy and red tape in India, it's anyone's guess, when that's going to happen.

It is said no one goes empty handed from Baba's Darga. You have to just ask and you shall receive.

Hindi Movies Latest Shooting Hotspot: Bandra-Worli Sea Link

This is a post article I have written on my other blog. Desi Bollywood Movies. I think it needs to be here on a Mumbai site. So...

"The first time I laid my eyes on the structure was when it was only half complete, some two years ago. Like a true Bombayiite, I was sure this thing would never be ready before I turn 50 and no longer able to drive a car. But lo and behold! It is here, all done and standing, in all its splendor and glory. Yes, I'm talking about the Bandra-Worli Sea Link which was recently inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi. Although, some people did try to create a controversy with regards to the naming of the bridge, the Sea link has overwhelmed all controversies and Bombayiites.



The reason for writing this on a Bollywood blog is that this spot has now become the latest hot spot for shooting forthcoming Hindi films in Bollywood. Recently Quick Gun Murugan was refused permission to shoot a song on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link because of the heavy crowd and also because there are a lot of Hindi Film makers who are racing to be the first to expose the bridge on film. Let's see who wins the race finally."
